Altered Veils :Telepathik Friend and the Twisted Flower Scene

Telepathik Friend’s sound is mysterious and languid. It brings us back to the primordial point of creation when the future of humans was uncertain at best, and all that existed was unfiltered spirit. Blown out bass and vocals swimming in reverb undulate underneath the raw atmospherics of it all. The bodies of each of the members sway in kind. This is total sensory experience: a true realization of modern psychedelia. The lights sway in colors and splashes of sound while we become more and more engrossed in the new world of neon costumes and modern junk talismans. The word psychedelic has been so grossly misinterpreted in today’s music culture that the meaning I am after becomes obscured. The bands that we would call psychedelic in popular culture tags are merely pointing their hat towards some total experience, or sometimes are just a limp reference to instrumentation used and pioneered 50 years ago. These acts never actually take us there, take us away…higher. Here Telepathik Friend shines as the real thing. They do not approximate experience, they are experience, and this truly merits the adjective psychedelic. The experience that the band creates is a sensory portal through which all time and spatial differentiation cease while we exist in the truth and untruth of it all.

Foxy Digitalis : Turn on the Resonator CD review

Telepathik Friend

“Turn On The Resonator”

October 8, 2010 By Crawford Philleo

Telepathik Friend represents the Texas front of the night-crawler, potion mixer, goth-step, digital stew, weirdo war that’s been gripping the globe as of late.   They pull from a similar set of sounds and visual queues you see in bands like Denver’s Modern Witch, or Montreal’s Hobo Cult crew, forging forth with a sound that’s abrasive and off-putting without ever being loud or aggressive.  Telepathik Friend definitely is a band that takes patience.  Wading through some of the slow, slow, slow, ridiculously slow numbers peppering the album reaps modest rewards as tracks are generally sluggish to get nowhere, offering extended drones and sickly harmonies that fail to build on themselves with any kind of internal variety.  They’re just there, and they stay there.  Overall this is album is kind of a slug: slimy, grimy… you don’t want to get too close to it, just stick your tongue out, squint one eye, and raise the eyebrow of the other.  There’s something cool behind it, too though.  Something mysterious unlocked by sciences you don’t care to study or understand, justified by forces unseen or unknown.  An organism that sits like a blob right in the middle of everything else popular and beautiful around it.  Just sitting there, pissing you off and fascinating you.

“I would never be able to say who the “best” band was at the Austin Psych Fest (whether this year or any other). First of all, like all art, music is personal and subjective – who can quantify such enjoyment? Second, the answer is Telepathik Friend.” - REVOLT OF THE APES.

Telepathik Friend knows its drugs

By Henry Gruel » I was in Richmond the other day weathering the boasts of an ex-pat Austinite who swore seven times over that his homeland lead all the world when it came to getting your bottom dollar for hallucinogenic experiences.

Future Shock

Future shock
Psych Fest is a festival whose gaze is firmly fixed on the past (that and its shoes), but between the noodling and nostalgia, several shocking glimpses of the world to come broke through; such as Houston’s Indian Jewelry, which worked harsh cacophony into a surprisingly melodic structure that flirted with apocalyptic meltdown. Also emerging from the nuclear wasteland of noise was the DayGlo mind-fuck of Telepathik Friend, whose highlighter-hued aesthetic was only slightly more bizarre than its undulating, drum-and-guitar eschewing, whale-song sounds.

Tape Bombs Review

As Telepathik Friend, they deliver a tripped-out ambient noise barrage that would be wholly cliche and annoying — if it weren’t for it honest approach and uncanny ability to get us lost in it’s almost infinite layers.  There is a fine line between artfulness and garbage, or “noise-for-noises-sake,” and this project, with their blown out drum machines, wailing space-stretching vocals, and their otherworldly strut toe this line perfectly, creating a wall of blasting sound you’ll want to linger. - Tape Bombs / An Austin Music Blog
